These moved southward, taking advantage of the collapse of the Toltec civilization, and founded Tenochtitlan, the ancient capital city, now Mexico City. The Aztec name comes from Aztlan which means"White Earth", and that alludes to its origins in the north of Mexico.Īccording to the historians and also their own tradition, the first Aztecs were hunters and gatherers of the north.
